UGACAT was established in 2017 as a coalition of SLM specialists. It was one the deliberate efforts in response to land degradation. UGACAT in collaboration with WOCAT is involved in customizing standardized tools for documenting, monitoring, and evaluating SLM know-how as well as disseminating it around the globe, enabling land users to exchange experiences.
Consultative Workshop, 30th January 2017 – Hotel Africana, Kampala.
This workshop was attended by 2 staff from WOCAT Secretariat, the 6 member National Expert Group, Head Project Implementation Unit from Project for restoration of livelihoods in Northern Region (PRELNOR). Also in attendance were various organisations including Makerere University, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry & Fisheries, Uganda Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (UFAAS), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), The National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Ministry of Water & Environment (MWE), The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF), Project for Restoration of Livelihood in Northern Region (PRELNOR). The consultative workshop was organised to coincide with the end of appraisal phase, dialogue on project outputs and targets, while streamlining implementation procedures towards scaling sustainable land management in Northern Uganda.
WOCAT Symposium At the 18th WOCAT Network Meeting held in June 2017 in Cali, Colombia, UGACAT presented its progress report during the symposium that included the documentation process, signing of MOU with the Ministry of Agriculture, a functional National Expert Group and working partnership with UNCCD country desk. UNCCD Conference of Parties 13 (COP13) in Ordos, China, 6-16 September 2017 UGACAT as a success story was presented at the UNCCD Conference of Parties (COP) in partnership with NEPAD AfriOCAT was established by the African delegates committed to the use and further development of WOCAT methods signing a communique at the end of the 17th WOCAT meeting held in Feldafing, Germany from the 8th – 11th June, 2015. The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) have now joined the discussions on AfriOCAT with the purpose of bringing on board more African countries & making the network operational. Consequently, NEPAD hosted a consultative meeting on operationalization of AfriOCAT from May 29-31, 2018 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania where ULN was invited to participate & present a success story on using WOCAT methods in Uganda.
